Seriously...everyone backs their files up on a regular basis...right?
I almost screwed the pooch a couple of days ago by coming dangerously close to losing almost 300 or so images when my hard drive hit a brick wall. The driver (my master boot record or MBR) was killed instantly! Right in the middle of making updates to my journal.
I did the usual restart and got the
blue screen of death along with various other errors and XP refused to start.
Step 1. PANIC! Yup...I did that!
Step 2. Crack a beer and try to think about this logically.
Step 3. Have a revelation--Did that too.
After searching some two thousand-odd web pages and alot of trial and error, I finally got the MBR to acknowledge that the file system was indeed an NTFS file system. Then the search for something to actually read the drive began. And I must say, it ended with a glorious ray of sunshine! Using a freeware, DOS-based program called
TestDisk 6.9. This little jewel saved my ass in ways I can't describe! It reads virtually every file system known to man and works on a number of platforms. I recommend you check it out!
So, little life lesson learned--keep your files backed up! My new PC will be ordered next week and I'm going to convert this one to a network raid server.
